Setting up R and RStudio: Installing R and RStudio
Recommended set-up
Setting the English language If something goes wrong when working with R or Excel and you search the internet for a solution, you will almost always find answers from people who work on an English system. So it is convenient that your laptop and Office applications are also in that language.
In a Dutch version of MS Windows 11 you do can change the language to English as follows:
- Open the Instellingen app
- From the menu, select
- Tijd en taal > Taal en regio
- Choose the English (United Kingdom) language as Windows-weergavetaal, or next to Voorkeurstalen, select Een taal toevoegen to install the desired language if it is not displayed.
Decimal notation For working with R, especially in combination with Excel, it is essential that decimal numbers are denoted with a decimal point. So, for example, use \(1.25\) instead of \(1{,}25\) as the decimal notation for the fraction \(\tfrac{5}{4}\).
In a Dutch version of MSWindows 11 you do this as follows:
- Open the Instellingen app
- From the menu, select Tijd en taal > Taal en regio
- Choose the English (United Kingdom) language as Windows-weergavetaal, or next to Voorkeurstalen, select Een taal toevoegen to install the desired language if it is not displayed.
